Information
Anthonies Mill Resort and Estates is a lake community just a little over an hours drive from St. Louis. It encompasses 600 acres of the Missouri Ozarks in the Meramec Valley, where one-acre and multiple-acre homesites have been developed around its own private 110 Acre Lake Ashley. Smaller fishing lakes, beaches and other amenities make Anthonies Mill the perfect place to build your summer home or retirement home. Quality is a way of life; all construction must be approved and strict indentures control development.
History and Development
At the location of Anthonies Mill Resort was once the town of Anthonies Mill (founded 1870). Legend has it that Jonas B. Anthony was the first Miller. There was a blacksmith, a druggist, and a shoemaker in town. The Summers and Anthony General Store was established in 1888 and persisted until the 50s. It was later called the Kimberland store. At one time there was a one-room school and a Post Office... No one seems to know the origin of the unusual spelling of the town.
In the 60s the Corp of Engineers bought up much of the local property for the ill-fated Meramec Dam. When the dam fell through, Dr. Jack Medler bought the property (Mar 16, 1983), envisioning the large valley with its spring fed stream (Ashley Branch) as a large lake.
Construction of Lake Ashley began in 1984 and was completed in January, 1986. The lake was stocked in that year. Roads were developed and the land was surveyed into one acre+ homesites. The first owners were Ron and Lamona Brown from Washington, MO. Amenities including three smaller fishing lakes were added over the ensuing years. There are presently 156 property owners and 48 homes.
Here are some memories of Ashley Dam Construction. The Dam is 55 feet high and has 15 feet of Freeboard. The water is 40 feet at the dam. The Spillway is 75 feet wide. Since the lake is Spring-fed, the water never drops down ands always Crystal Clear.
